Well, none if your statements are true. Here are some medical answers to tanning in general.





The dangers of ultraviolet (UV) radiation are from the sun, tanning beds, and sun lamps. The two types of ultraviolet radiation are Ultraviolet A (UVA) and Ultraviolet B (UVB). UVB has long been associated with sunburn while UVA has been recognized as a deeper penetrating radiation that causes more damage.





While skin cancer has been associated with sunburn, even moderate tanning may also produce the same effect. UV radiation from the sun, tanning beds, or sun lamps may cause skin cancer and can have a damaging effect on the immune system. It can also cause premature aging of the skin, giving it a wrinkled, leathery appearance.





However, sunlight is necessary. Vitamin D is made by being exposed to sunlight, but just a small amount of sunlight is needed for the body to manufacture it. It does not require a suntan.





So if you are going to tan, wear 100% UV rated sunglasses, try and avoid the sun between 10 and 4 (peak UV rays), and if possible, wear SPF 15+ sunscreen.

Reply:Well i used to work in a tanning salon n live in FL, so i have some experience.... 1. %26amp; 2. are false. You can get cancer from tanning beds, in fact they are more dangerous b/c the rays are more powerful, hence the tan in 5 mins.....and just having a tan doesn't mean your more protected from the sun, sunblock is very important. Lastly, i think that a sun tan is evidence of skin damage b/c it's the result you get from being exposed to the suns rays.
Reply:Number three is very true about tanning beds. Any time you are out in the sun without protection UVB rays and UVA rays are damaging your skin whether its mild or serious. Just becasue you do not tan or burn does not man that you are not at risk for skin cancer. You may spend a whole day a the beach and not burn or even tan, but that does not mean that you are not damaged. And tanning beds are the most foolish things to use. They will kill quicker than the sun because the UVB rays tanning beds offer attack skin cells a lot quicker than the sun does. So when you tan in a tanning bed, you're becoming more and more prone to skin cancer each time you use one. People may think real tans are sexier and a lot better, but in the future, they're going to regret it when they see premature aging cross them, sunspot damage come into full play, and skin cancer creeping on them. Artificial tanning is always the best way to go. The best artificial tan is tanning moisturizer diluting it with normal moisturizer to get a lovely, even glow that leaves absolutely no streakiness because of the diluting.
Reply:I used to work for a dermatologist, and am very fair-skinned. These are things I had to know for my HEALTH!





1. FALSE! Sunscreen (SPF 45) is the best protection for your skin.





2. FALSE! Tanning beds are just as bad, if not worse, than tanning outside. The damaging rays are more concentrated in tanning beds, which means more damage!





3. TRUE! A suntan forms when your skin is damaged!





Self-tanners, which come in lotions, sprays, foams, etc., are the only healthy way to tan. Or if you don't want to do it yourself, instead of going to a tanning bed, find a local spray-tan place!





I recommend exfoliating and shaving before you apply self-tanner. After your self-tanner dries, wait a couple of hours before getting wet, and put on lotion every day to make your tan last!
