Why do white people care so much about tanning? Is being white so bad?

You see girls buying tanning lotions, or doing the tanning bed thing everyday till they look like burnt leather or something. Why dont they just accept they are white? Does anyone else think that being to tan is kind of gross? Im not talking about a little tan from the sun swimming. Im talking about the people who tan so much it looks brown or burned. I just dont get it. Dont get me wrong im not coming down on white people because I am a white guy myself. I just dont understand why ppl are so obsessed with it.

I think it is because so many are obsessed with what they see on tv, in movies and in fashion magazines.....somehow, "tan" has become associated with "healthy". Of course it isn't, tanning ages the skin and makes you look sixty when you are forty, but the younger people are, the less they seem to care about how they will look when they are forty.

I've SEEN those brown lizard-looking people... One woman was at a retirement center, and I offered to help her to the ice-cream line, and SHE WAS ONLY A VISITOR she looked like she was 80 with all that crabby wrinkled skin!
Reply:personally, i wouldn't wanna be white... however, it is kinda gross when people look all orangey. i agree with you... some people take it too far.
Reply:Women tan because they are too insecure with themselves to step away from the crowd. In other words, everyone is a trendwhore. You would probably understand if you were female.
Reply:I'm white. I'm female. I don't want to tan. I go a bit brown from the sun, but I'll never set foot in a tanning bed. I don't think skin cancer is worth the risk. We're told that tanned skin looks sexy, and attractive. Most models in magazines are tanned. Actresses in movies are usually tanned. Women in commercials are usually tanned. It's hard to compete with those images for a lot of women.
Reply:Tan does look good but, too much of a tan is bad! I don't know why women tan 7 times a week for! I think they want to be Brazilian!
Reply:I think it is an American thing, more than a "white" thang, though I could be wrong. I don't quite get it myself.
Reply:Some people are reflective white though. Tans just generally look good. If everyone were just white and didn't have any tan or olive complextion we would be blinded daily by the reflections :D
Reply:i don' t tan and never have...i'm very white and i like my light skin just the way it is...besides, at 50 (yes 50) i hardly have a single wrinkle...that's partially genetics but mostly because i stay out of the sun!
Reply:Some tanning is good for your health. but want most do is over do it. I can understand having a little tan but to the point they are leather is stupid!!

me, on the other hand, id rather go to the beach and tan there-- going in the water to splash around a little with friends

Reply:well coming from a girl who likes to tan(only once or twice a week though, i dont like leather skin)...brown skin is just pretty and the sun and the tanning bed clear your skin and it also lets out endorphines, thats why you feel better after you tan. Also if youre fat, tan fat looks better than pale fat--thats what I've always heard. Clothes just look better on when your skin is tanner....thats my opinion
Reply:well at least for me being tan ehances muscle look. i workout quite a bit and used to be a top amateur bodybuilder and being tan ehances the muscles and makes you look healthier. it makes muscle bellies look deeper and more profound, IMO. its not the healthiest thing to do, but i feel better when im tan because i look better.
Reply:When they are in their forties they will have skin like a catchers mitt. But they are living for the moment...I just hope they are giving money for cancer research.
Reply:Some people think it will clear up a bad case of acne, or that they need some color in their skin to look healthy. I don't agree with either, I am very allergic to sunlight. I use the highest proof sunscreen there is and I still have problems, with scars as a result. Yes I see a dermatologist.
Reply:tanning its nasty,you look all orange and suff,i like natural skin color,im not white but im light skin color ,i love my skin color its hows how latinas like me come in so many flavas lol
